Lesson 7 of 9

Speed, distance and time

Objective. Calculate speed, distance or time from the other two.

The key idea

Speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranged: distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed. Units must match — km with hours gives km/h.

Worked example

A car travels 150 km in 2 hours 30 minutes. Find the speed.

150 … 2
Illustrated card showing 150 … 2
  1. 12 h 30 min = 2.5 hours.
  2. 2150 ÷ 2.5 = 60.

Answer: 60 km/h

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Writing 2 hours 30 minutes as 2.3 hours.
