Lesson 8 of 9

Density and mass

Objective. Use density = mass ÷ volume in both directions.

The key idea

Density tells you the mass of each unit of volume. Mass = density × volume, and volume = mass ÷ density.

Worked example

A block has volume 20 cm³ and density 7 g/cm³. Find its mass.

20 … 7
Illustrated card showing 20 … 7
  1. 1Mass = density × volume.
  2. 27 × 20 = 140.

Answer: 140 g

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Dividing volume by mass because the formula was recalled upside down.
