Ratio
Lesson 1 of 9
Sharing in a ratio
Objective. Divide a quantity in a given ratio.
The key idea
Add the parts of the ratio to find how many shares there are, find the value of one share, then multiply.
Worked example
Share £180 in the ratio 4 : 5.
- 14 + 5 = 9 shares.
- 2180 ÷ 9 = 20 per share.
- 34 × 20 = 80 and 5 × 20 = 100.
Answer: £80 and £100
