Learn: the key idea

Add the parts of the ratio to find how many shares there are, find the value of one share, then multiply.

Worked example

Share £180 in the ratio 4 : 5.

1 $4 + 5 = 9 shares.$
2 $180 \div 9 = 20 per share.$
3 $4 \times 20 = 80 and 5 \times 20 = 100.$

Answer: £80 and £100
