Sharing in a ratio

Objective. Divide a quantity in a given ratio.

The key idea

Add the parts of the ratio to find how many shares there are, find the value of one share, then multiply.

Worked example

Share £180 in the ratio 4 : 5.

  1. 14 + 5 = 9 shares.
  2. 2180 ÷ 9 = 20 per share.
  3. 34 × 20 = 80 and 5 × 20 = 100.

Answer: £80 and £100
