Direct proportion

Objective. Solve proportion problems using the unitary method.

The key idea

Find the value of one unit first, then scale up to the amount you need.

Worked example

6 pens cost £4.50. What do 10 cost?

  1. 1One pen costs 4.50 ÷ 6 = 0.75.
  2. 210 × 0.75 = 7.50.

Answer: £7.50
