Lesson 8 of 10

The SUVAT equations

Objective. Select and apply the right constant-acceleration equation.

The key idea

List s, u, v, a, t and mark the three you know plus the one you want. Choose the equation containing exactly those four letters.

Worked example

u = 5 m/s, a = 2 m/s², t = 4 s. Find s.

u = 5 m/s
Illustrated card showing u = 5 m/s
  1. 1Use s = ut + ½at².
  2. 2s = 5(4) + ½(2)(16).
  3. 3s = 20 + 16 = 36.

Answer: 36 m

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Using SUVAT when the acceleration is not constant.
