Learn: the key idea

A complete A Level review draws together pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics into one connected view of the qualification, checking fluency across algebra, trigonometry, calculus, vectors, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, forces, moments and kinematics. Demonstrating connected mastery means recognising when a real-world or exam problem requires combining techniques from different strands, such as using calculus within a mechanics context or algebraic manipulation within a statistical derivation, and communicating solutions with full justification. For example, a single exam question might require differentiating a displacement function, then using the result within a hypothesis test about measurement error, linking mechanics and statistics.

Worked example

A particle's displacement is modelled by s = t³ − 6t² + 9t. As a final review task, find the times when the particle is at rest and its total distance travelled in the first 4 seconds.

Bar chart of the values 6, 9, 4
  1. 1v = ds/dt = 3t² − 12t + 9 = 3(t−1)(t−3), so rest at t = 1 and t = 3
  2. 2s(0)=0, s(1)=1−6+9=4, s(3)=27−54+27=0, s(4)=64−96+36=4
  3. 3Distances: 0→4 (up), 4→0 (down 4), 0→4 (up 4): total so far 4+4+4
  4. 4Total distance = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 m

Answer: Rest at t = 1 s and t = 3 s; total distance travelled = 12 m

Concept mastery

Based on your past attempts at this lesson — the question types to practise again come first.

Practice

Practice happens on its own screen, one question at a time. Answers stay hidden until you submit yours, and you can stop and pick up at the same question later.

Start practising

Common mistake. Students revise each topic in isolation and struggle when a question combines strands, for example forgetting to apply calculus skills within a mechanics problem on variable acceleration. Practise mixed, multi-strand questions so connections between pure, statistics and mechanics become automatic.
