Learn: the key idea
Probability and statistics synthesis builds a complete stochastic analysis: modelling data with a probability distribution, estimating its parameters, checking model assumptions, and quantifying uncertainty in conclusions via confidence intervals or hypothesis tests. For example, given sample data assumed normal, the synthesis estimates the mean x̄, checks normality with a diagnostic plot, then reports a 95% confidence interval for the mean as x̄ ± 1.96·s/√n rather than just x̄ alone. Each stage depends on the previous: the confidence interval's validity relies on the normality assumption having been checked, not simply assumed.
Worked example
In a probability and statistics synthesis, a sample of n = 25 has mean x̄ = 50 and standard deviation s = 10. Using the formula x̄ ± 1.96·s/√n, find the upper bound of the 95% confidence interval.
- 1Compute the standard error: s/√n = 10/√25 = 10/5 = 2.
- 2Compute the margin of error: 1.96 × 2 = 3.92.
- 3Add the margin of error to the sample mean: 50 + 3.92.
- 4This gives the upper confidence bound of 53.92.
Answer: 53.92

Practice
Practice happens on its own screen, one question at a time. Answers stay hidden until you submit yours, and you can stop and pick up at the same question later.
Start practisingCommon mistake. A common mistake is computing a confidence interval using the normal-based formula without first checking whether the data's distributional assumption (such as approximate normality) is reasonable, which can make the stated confidence level inaccurate.
