Learn: the key idea

An equation is a balance. Whatever you do to one side you must do to the other, undoing operations in reverse order.

Worked example

Solve 5x − 4 = 3x + 10.

1 $Subtract 3x from both sides: 2x - 4 = 10.$
2 $Add 4: 2x = 14.$
3 $Divide by 2.$

Answer: x = 7
