Solving linear equations
Objective. Solve equations with the unknown on one or both sides.
The key idea
An equation is a balance. Whatever you do to one side you must do to the other, undoing operations in reverse order.
Worked example
Solve 5x − 4 = 3x + 10.
- 1Subtract 3x from both sides: 2x − 4 = 10.
- 2Add 4: 2x = 14.
- 3Divide by 2.
Answer: x = 7
