Lesson 3 of 10

Constant acceleration

Objective. Apply the suvat equations to motion in a straight line.

The key idea

List s, u, v, a and t, mark what you know, then choose the equation that omits the one quantity you neither know nor want.

Worked example

A car accelerates from 5 m/s at 2 m/s² for 4 s. Find the distance.

5 … 2
Illustrated card showing 5 … 2
  1. 1s = ut + ½at².
  2. 2s = 5(4) + ½(2)(16).

Answer: 36 m
