Lesson 8 of 10

Reading bar charts

Objective. Read and compare values from a bar chart with a scaled axis.

The key idea

Check the scale first: a gridline may be worth 2, 5 or 10. Then read the top of each bar against it.

Worked example

Gridlines go 0, 10, 20. A bar sits halfway between 10 and 20.

1/2
Fraction bar showing 1 out of 2 parts shaded
  1. 1Each gap is 10.
  2. 2Halfway is 5 more than 10.

Answer: 15

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Assuming every gridline is one unit.
