Angles and symmetry
Lesson 7 of 10

Lines of symmetry

Objective. Find all lines of symmetry in common shapes.

The key idea

A line of symmetry folds the shape so both halves match exactly. A square has 4, a rectangle 2, an equilateral triangle 3, a circle infinitely many.

Worked example

How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle have?

Diagram of a rectangle
  1. 1Fold across the middle horizontally — halves match.
  2. 2Fold vertically — halves match.
  3. 3Diagonal folds do not match.

Answer: 2

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Counting rectangle diagonals as lines of symmetry.
