Giving change

Objective. Work out change from a note using counting on.

The key idea

Change is the difference between what you pay with and what you spend. Count on from the price to the amount handed over.

Worked example

You spend £7.35 and pay with £10.

Clock face showing 7 hours and 35 minutes
  1. 1£7.35 to £7.40 is 5p.
  2. 2£7.40 to £8 is 60p.
  3. 3£8 to £10 is £2. Total: £2.65.

Answer: £2.65
