Adding amounts of money
Objective. Add amounts written in pounds and pence.
The key idea
Line up the decimal points and treat pence like the ones and tens columns. 100 pence make one pound, so carry at 100, not at 10.
Worked example
£3.45 + £2.80
- 1Add the pence: 45 + 80 = 125 pence.
- 2125 pence is £1.25, so carry £1.
- 3Pounds: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6, leaving 25 pence.
Answer: £6.25
