Lesson 10 of 10

The range

Objective. Find the range and say what it tells you.

The key idea

Range = largest − smallest. It measures spread, not typical size, so a small range means consistent values.

Worked example

Find the range of 6, 2, 9, 4.

6294
Bar chart of the values 6, 2, 9, 4
  1. 1Largest: 9.
  2. 2Smallest: 2.
  3. 39 − 2 = 7.

Answer: 7

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Reporting the range as 'from 2 to 9' rather than a single number.
