Lesson 3 of 10

Mean, median, mode and range

Objective. Calculate and choose between the three averages.

The key idea

Mean shares the total equally, median is the middle value in order, mode is the most common, and range measures spread rather than average.

Worked example

Find the mean, median, mode and range of 3, 7, 7, 9, 14.

377914
Bar chart of the values 3, 7, 7, 9, 14
  1. 1Total is 40 and there are 5 values, so mean = 8.
  2. 2The middle value in order is 7.
  3. 37 appears twice, so mode = 7.
  4. 4Range = 14 − 3 = 11.

Answer: Mean 8, median 7, mode 7, range 11
