Column addition with carrying
Objective. Add two-digit numbers in columns, carrying into the tens.
The key idea
Add the ones first. If the ones total ten or more, exchange ten ones for one ten and carry it.
Worked example
Calculate 47 + 38.
- 17 + 8 = 15. Write 5, carry 1 ten.
- 24 + 3 + 1 = 8 tens.
Answer: 85
