Bridging through ten
Objective. Add across a ten boundary by splitting the second number.
The key idea
To add 8 + 5, first make 10 by taking 2 from the 5, then add what is left.
Worked example
Calculate 8 + 5.
- 18 needs 2 more to reach 10.
- 2Split 5 into 2 and 3.
- 38 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 3 = 13.
Answer: 13
