Short division with remainders

Objective. Divide a three-digit number by a single digit, handling remainders.

The key idea

Work left to right, carrying whatever is left over into the next digit.

Worked example

Calculate 738 ÷ 6.

  1. 17 ÷ 6 = 1 remainder 1, carry the 1 to make 13.
  2. 213 ÷ 6 = 2 remainder 1, carry to make 18.
  3. 318 ÷ 6 = 3.
