Long multiplication
Objective. Multiply a three-digit number by a two-digit number.
The key idea
Split the smaller number into tens and ones, multiply separately, then add the two partial products.
Worked example
Calculate 342 × 24.
- 1342 × 4 = 1368.
- 2342 × 20 = 6840.
- 31368 + 6840 = 8208.
Answer: 8208
