Percentages of amounts
Objective. Find a percentage of a quantity with and without a calculator.
The key idea
Find 10% by dividing by 10 and 1% by dividing by 100, then build the percentage you need from those pieces.
Worked example
Find 35% of £240.
- 110% of 240 = 24, so 30% = 72.
- 25% is half of 10% = 12.
- 372 + 12 = 84.
Answer: £84
