Finding the percentage change

Objective. Express a change as a percentage of the original amount.

The key idea

Percentage change = change ÷ original × 100. The original amount is always the denominator, not the new one.

Worked example

A price rises from £40 to £46. What is the percentage increase?

  1. 1Change: 46 − 40 = 6.
  2. 26 ÷ 40 = 0.15.
  3. 30.15 × 100 = 15%.

Answer: 15% increase
