Partitioning two-digit numbers
Objective. Split a two-digit number into tens and ones.
The key idea
The position of a digit tells you its value. In 47 the 4 means four tens (40) and the 7 means seven ones.
Worked example
Partition 63.
- 1The left digit is 6, in the tens place, so it is worth 60.
- 2The right digit is 3, in the ones place, so it is worth 3.
Answer: 63 = 60 + 3
