Two-step problems
Objective. Solve problems needing two operations in the right order.
The key idea
Write down what you need first, work it out, then use that result in the second step. Keep the units with every number.
Worked example
4 packs of 6 cakes cost £2 each pack. How much per cake?
- 1Total cakes: 4 × 6 = 24.
- 2Total cost: 4 × £2 = £8.
- 3Cost per cake: £8 ÷ 24 ≈ £0.33.
Answer: About 33p per cake
