Equivalent fractions

Objective. Generate and recognise fractions of equal value.

The key idea

Multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same number cuts the same cake into more or fewer slices — the amount is unchanged.

Worked example

Simplify 18/24.

  1. 1The highest common factor of 18 and 24 is 6.
  2. 218 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
