Counting to ten
Lesson 1 of 11

The counting sequence

Objective. Say the numbers one to ten in order, forwards and backwards.

The key idea

Counting is a fixed song. The order never changes, so once the tune is learned it can be used to count anything at all.

Worked example

Count the five bears on the table.

Illustration showing 5 objects to count
  1. 1Touch the first bear and say “one”.
  2. 2Touch each next bear, saying the next number.
  3. 3The last number said tells you how many there are.

Answer: There are 5 bears.

Practice

Each question comes with a picture and a listen button. Try it first, then reveal the answer.

Common mistake. Skipping objects or counting one twice. Move each object as it is counted.
