Ordering numbers to twenty
Objective. Put numbers up to 20 in order from smallest to largest.
The key idea
Numbers get bigger as you count forwards. To order them, find the smallest, write it down, then find the smallest of what is left.
Worked example
Order 12, 7, 19, 4 from smallest to largest.
- 1Smallest is 4.
- 2Then 7, then 12.
- 3Largest is 19.
Answer: 4, 7, 12, 19

Common mistake. Thinking a two-digit number is smaller because its first digit is small, e.g. 19 before 4.
